BSG Apprenticeship
The Building Safety Group (BSG) is very pleased to announce it has launched an ‘Apprenticeship Scheme’ for young people interested in becoming a qualified Health & Safety professional. By partnering with Bridgwater and Taunton college, BSG will provide the successful applicant with ‘on the job’ practical training alongside college work.
BSG’s apprenticeship will run for two years and will lead to an ‘Advanced Level 3’ qualification in ‘Health, Safety and the Environment’. During their time with BSG, the apprentice will:
- Learn about health, safety and environment law and regulations, how these are applied, and possible consequences for breach
- Learn about how construction companies work, their duties and responsibilities to protect workers, and help to ensure they are adhering to the law
- Visit construction sites to carry out detailed site inspection reports, report writing and communicating with BSG member site managers and senior management
The training provided will include:
- Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment Technician – Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours
- Edexcel Level 2 Functional Skills English – Classroom (Engineering)
- Edexcel Level 2 Functional Skills mathematics – Classroom (Engineering)
- Edexcel Level 1 Functional Skills ICT (Engineering)
At the end of the apprenticeship, the individual will become a fully qualified ‘Construction Health & Safety Adviser’, responsible for inspecting and risk assessing construction sites for BSG’s members.
Stephen Bell, Managing Director at BSG commented: “We believe our apprenticeship will encourage young people to develop the expertise they need for a career in health and safety”. Stephen added: “It will also help to prepare our workforce with the necessary ‘future ready’ skills, which are vital for succession planning at BSG.”
Apprenticeships in England are available to anyone over the age of 16 and take between one and six years to complete. They are paid jobs which incorporate on and off the job training. Apprentices have the same rights as other employees and are entitled to be paid at least the apprentice rate of the national minimum wage.
To apply for BSG’s apprenticeship, please visit the Government’s ‘Find an apprenticeship’ webpage: Safety, Health and Environment Technician Apprentice – Find an apprenticeship (findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk). Three apprenticeship positions are available, one in each of BSG’s regions, operating in the Southwest, Midlands and the North.
